Professional coach urges elite athletes to get vaccinated

Jim Rutberg, a professional athletics coach for Carmichael Training Systems, a company which works with world champions and Olympic athletes, has urged all athletes to get vaccinated this flu season.

Mr Rutberg, author of ‘The Time-Crunched Triathlete’ outlined a series of simple precautions that athletes of all levels can take to ensure they remain in peak condition this flu season. Along with regularly sanitising hands and taking in regular fluids, Mr Rutberg urged athletes to:

  • Get a flu shot. Consult your physician first, of course. Many athletes who are generally healthy resist getting a flu shot because they don’t have a compromised immune system. But getting the flu will knock your training back by at least two weeks and a flu shot not only protects you, it helps protect more vulnerable people you come in contact with.
